While Greece is most known for its beautiful coastline and islands, the country is actually one of the most mountainous countries in Europe. With high peaks rising all over the country from Mt. Olympus, to Pindus, and Mt. Taygetos in the Peloponnese, even most islands have a mountainous terrain. As a result, Greece has some of the most beautiful mountain villages that one should visit. Most of these villages are located on steep slopes with difficult access which has resulted in a more authentic expression of Greek culture and traditions. Furthermore, since these destinations are visited less frequently by foreigners, one will also encounter a more authentic type of hospitality. This is true especially if one visits these places during the summer months which are in essence low seasons for these destinations.
From skiing at the posh resorts of Arachova near Athens, and Kaimaktsalan near Thessaloniki, hiking Mt. Olympus, to agro-tourism activities in Pindus or the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) many different experiences can be pursued. One thing you will find in all mountain destinations is a cuisine with delicacies from each locality.
